When you first meet a disabled person, what is your first reaction? Curiosity? Sympathy? If you experience any of these emotions, you are not alone．Chances are that you don’t regularly associate with someone who is disabled．Here are four points to keep in mind if you should happen to meet a disabled person.
Disabled people can lead active lives
With few exceptions, a disability does not prevent someone from working, raising a family, or taking part in social activities．Many sports and recreation programs have been adapted to a person with a disability．Instead of concentrating on the disability, look at the person the same way you would look at any normal person.

Offer help when necessary
You see a woman in a wheelchair having trouble entering a building．It’s usually appropriate to lend a hand if someone is having obvious difficulty, but keep in mind that not everyone will be willing to accept your help．Unless the woman in the wheelchair is in danger, you do your part.
Remember that we all have obstacles to overcome
No matter who we are, each of us has a weakness or challenge to face．Like you, a disabled person would much rather be accepted for who they are, rather than be pitied．Many friends have said to me, “I often forget that you are blind.” To me, that is the top compliment (贊揚(yáng)).

WASHINGTON --- It’s a great achievement that inspires concepts of robots with consciousness and independent minds.
When people or animals get hurt, they can usually compensate for minor injuries and keep limping along, but for robots, even slight damage can make them stumble and fall. However, a recently made robot has demonstrated a new ability: it can heal its own damage.
The new robot, which looks like a splay ? legged (弓形腿的), four ? footed starfish can sense injury to itself and adapt. That ability sets the new robot apart from earlier machines. Because the robot can recover from unfamiliar places.
“There is a need for planetary robotic rovers (行星機(jī)器探測(cè)車) to be able to fix things on their own,” says Josh Bongard, a professor in the University of Vermont, who is one of the device’s creator. “Robots on other planets must be able to continue their mission without human help if they are damaged and cannot communicate their problem back to Earth.”
A typical robot functions according to a computer program, but the new robot works differently. First, sensors in its four legs observe the robot’s movements and signals to its built ? in computer. Almost everyone accepts the fact that crime can never be wiped out entirely. Thus, control of crime becomes the focus of the police and governments around the world. The question lawmakers must answer is, “Which system of criminal punishment works best for society?” Each country has developed its own ideas for solutions to this question, and these solutions then determine how criminals are punished under different systems. However, none of the current systems in use has proven 100 percent effective.
There are many ideas regarding punishment of criminals. Some systems look only to get retribution (報(bào)應(yīng)，懲罰) against criminals. These systems work to frighten criminals away from repeating a crime in the future. These systems also try to deter (使…打消念頭) others in society by using the criminal as an example of what can happen to a person if he or she is caught committing crimes. The goal of these systems is to return a former criminal to society after a required period of treatment and training, usually in prison. Capital punishment is another form of punishment which systems use in extreme criminal cases, sometimes involving such crimes as murder, rape, and violent theft. In these cases, the person is put to death. Today, capital punishment is used in relatively few countries. Many countries have done away with it. In others, capital punishment remains only officially in law books but is rarely used. However, capital punishment remains in use in some countries, including the United States.
When looking at the number of crimes committed, the effectiveness of any of these forms of punishment comes into question. In the United States, for example, 80 percent of the people arrested each year are male, and the majority of these are young men or boys. I come from England and I’ve been here in America for ten days. I miss my friends a lot. I miss my family too, but somehow I feel like I miss my friends even more, maybe because I spent more time with my friends than with my family when I was at home.
I have a lot of friends in England, and they live all over the country. Some of them live very close to me while some of them live about a thousand miles away. But still we can be friends in spite of the distances. There are some friends who grew up with me. We learnt how to ride bicycles together. And there are a few other friends who went to school with me. But the friends that I feel closest to are those who went to college with me because when I started going to college, I was already 16. And at 16, you know a lot more than when you were 6 years old.
The only way that I can communicate with my friends back in England is by e-mail. I send my friends e-mails every day and they send me a lot of messages every day too. Usually they’d tell me about how life is, especially about the results of the soccer games. I’m a soccer fan. And I feel like I’m so close to them when reading those e-mail messages.
